About Us

The Hibiscus Working Group – two renowned Hibiscus growers, breeding company Agriom and  youg plant producer Selecta One – has been jointly developing Sunny Cities varieties. The current range comprises around twenty varieties, all of which branch well, produce a lot of buds per branch, flower lavishly and for a long time, and have good shelf life.

Our most recent selection programme focuses on the development of varieties that can be grown under southern climate conditions and that are set for sale on the South European market. In this context we set up trial fields at the nursery of our member Piante Keicher in Latina in Italy. Our efforts are resulting in a new line of Sunny Cities varieties, the first of which are Amalfi, Funchal, Lucca, Sabaudia and Sorrento.

Besides this climate-specific breeding work the Hibiscus Working Group makes constant efforts to develop varieties for normal, small and large pot sizes, and also standard Hibiscus trees.

Characteristics

Some of the specific characteristics of the Sunny Cities Hibiscus:

  • Little risk of bud drop
  • Perpetual flowering
  • Excellent branching
  • Good keeping quality
  • Lavish flowering

Grower-friendly varieties

Hibiscus plants need a lot of water, so they must be planted in soil with a high moisture-retention capacity whose structure won’t be adversely affected by large doses of water and will retain a sufficiently high air content. The heating temperature may be reduced for short periods of time. The pot temperature should be more or less the same as the heating temperature.

Hibiscus plants tolerate large amounts of light and also enjoy direct sunlight. Screening may be required only to adjust climate conditions. Fertilisation should be based on accurate measurements of the pH and EC during irrigation and should include extra doses of specific trace elements. Hibiscus plants may need extra growth regulation during their development, depending on the climate conditions.
